In 2009 I set up a page in Blogger [figuringthroughportuguese] to help me reflect on language learning as process. As well as being a researcher, I have taught Spanish for some years. Spanish is not my native tongue, but I’m fluent. For many years – and for reasons you can find on the first iteration of this blog – I have been learning Portuguese. Some of the time I’ve learnt alone and at others with teachers. I have had periods of intensive focus and then have had to leave this project aside due to time constraints. This blog is a way of reflecting on what it means to be a language learner to help me understand that experience for my students, and what it means to learn Portuguese, a language with fewer on- and offline supports than Spanish.
